Steady Start: four weeks of small steps

What it is

A gentle four-week start that adds a little walking, strength, balance, food, and home safety each week, then helps you look back and choose what comes next.

Who it is for, and who should ask first

For: Adults 50+ who want a small, structured start and can already stand and walk comfortably.

Ask first: Anyone told by a clinician to avoid activity, or anyone with new or worsening symptoms. If you have a health condition, ask a clinician what is right for you first.

Week by week

  1. Week 1: Start small

Get moving in small pieces. A good week is 3 of these steps. Fewer is fine.

    • Take a two-minute movement break
    • Take a comfortable 10-minute walk
    • Do one comfortable chair-strength set
    • Practice five minutes of supported balance
  2. Week 2: Build the rhythm

Repeat what worked and add attention to food and home safety. A good week is 4 of these steps. Fewer is fine.

    • Take a comfortable 10-minute walk
    • Take a comfortable 10-minute walk indoors
    • Do one comfortable chair-strength set
    • Practice five minutes of supported balance
    • Name the protein in one meal
    • Find and fix one home hazard
  3. Week 3: Add a little

A longer walk, a second round of strength, and a step for sleep. A good week is 4 of these steps. Fewer is fine.

    • Take a brisk 20-minute walk
    • Do two rounds of chair stands
    • Practice five minutes of supported balance
    • Add one protein food to your breakfast
    • Walk with someone for fifteen minutes
    • Pick one bedtime habit to try tonight
  4. Week 4: Look back, look ahead

Notice what changed and choose what to keep. A good week is 3 of these steps. Fewer is fine.

    • Take a comfortable 10-minute walk
    • Do two rounds of chair stands
    • Send one specific check-in
    • Give ten minutes to something you want to learn

This week also suggests a retest of your 30-second chair stand, if you saved a result earlier. Open the chair stand check.

How it works with your day

  • Your daily step still comes from your goals, interests, and limits. During a program, this week's steps count for more, until you reach the week's number.
  • Anything you have said you will not do is never offered, even if it is part of a week.
  • Skip a day, swap a step, or repeat a week. Nothing here is a streak, and a missed day is only information.
  • My Fit after 50 shows where you are in the program and what is next.

The order and pace of the weeks are our own suggestion, not a researched protocol. Every step inside is one of our reviewed daily actions, with its own safety note. Skipping days is fine, and you can repeat any week. This is general education, not medical advice. No clinician has reviewed this program.
